Publication Ethics

Introduction & COPE Statement

Indonesian Journal of Material Research is fully committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity in academic publishing. Ethical conduct in research and scholarly communication is fundamental to ensuring trust among authors, readers, reviewers, and editors. As part of this commitment, the journal adheres to the principles and best practices outlined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). All stakeholders involved in the publication process—including authors, reviewers, editors, and the publisher—are expected to act in accordance with these standards in all stages of manuscript handling, peer review, authorship, and dissemination.

This Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement defines the ethical responsibilities of all parties associated with the journal. It covers essential issues such as authorship and originality, conflicts of interest, peer review practices, data transparency, the handling of misconduct, and the roles of the editorial team and publisher. By submitting a manuscript to Indonesian Journal of Material Research, authors acknowledge that they have read and understood this policy, and that they agree to comply with its terms throughout the publication process.

Authorship and Originality

All manuscripts submitted to Indonesian Journal of Material Research must represent original scholarly work that has not been previously published and is not under consideration elsewhere. Authors are responsible for ensuring the authenticity and novelty of their submissions, and any use of the work or ideas of others must be properly cited and acknowledged. Plagiarism, in any form—including self-plagiarism, improper paraphrasing, or uncredited reuse of previously published material—is strictly prohibited and constitutes a serious violation of publication ethics.

Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made significant intellectual contributions to the research. This includes involvement in the conception or design of the study, data acquisition or analysis, and the drafting or critical revision of the manuscript. All listed authors must have approved the final version of the manuscript and must agree to its submission for publication. Individuals who contributed to the work but do not meet the criteria for authorship—such as those who provided technical assistance, general support, or writing help—should be acknowledged in a dedicated section of the paper, with their consent.

The corresponding author bears primary responsibility for communication with the journal throughout the submission, review, and publication process. It is also the corresponding author’s duty to ensure that all co-authors are appropriately included and that all aspects of authorship are agreed upon prior to submission. Misrepresentation of authorship, including honorary or ghost authorship, is considered unethical and may lead to rejection or retraction of the manuscript.

Conflicts of Interest

All participants in the publication process—authors, editors, and reviewers—must disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest that could influence the objectivity, integrity, or transparency of the submitted work or the editorial decision-making process. A conflict of interest may exist when an individual’s personal, financial, or professional affiliations could be perceived to affect their judgment.

For authors, conflicts may include, but are not limited to, financial ties such as funding, grants, consultancies, stock ownership, paid expert testimony, employment, patent applications, or any other form of financial support. Non-financial interests, such as personal relationships, academic competition, or intellectual beliefs that could affect interpretation of data or conclusions, must also be declared. At the time of submission, authors must provide a conflict of interest statement within the manuscript or in a separate form. If no conflicts exist, the authors must state: “The authors declare no conflicts of interest.”

For editors and editorial board members, any involvement in a submission—such as co-authorship, close personal or professional relationships with the authors, or a competing research agenda—requires recusal from the review and decision-making process for that manuscript.

For reviewers, any situation that could create a bias, such as competitive, collaborative, or personal relationships with any of the authors or institutions involved, must be disclosed to the editor prior to accepting the review. Reviewers must decline to review any manuscript for which they cannot provide an impartial and objective assessment.

Failure to disclose conflicts of interest may lead to rejection or retraction of the article. Transparency in disclosing potential competing interests is critical to maintaining trust in the scientific publishing process.

Ethical Oversight (human, animal, hazards)

Indonesian Journal of Material Research upholds rigorous ethical standards for research involving human participants, animals, and hazardous materials. Authors are responsible for ensuring that all research is conducted in accordance with internationally accepted ethical guidelines and applicable institutional, national, and international regulations.

For research involving human participants, authors must confirm that informed consent was obtained from all participants and that the study received prior approval from an appropriate ethics committee or institutional review board (IRB). A statement to this effect must be included in the manuscript. Privacy rights and the confidentiality of personal data must be strictly maintained in accordance with relevant data protection laws and ethical principles such as the Declaration of Helsinki.

For animal research, authors must provide a clear statement that the study was approved by an Institutional Animal Care And Use Committee (IACUC) or equivalent, and that all procedures were carried out in accordance with recognized standards for the humane treatment of animals.

If a study involves the use of hazardous chemicals, biological agents, or equipment, the authors must explicitly state this in the manuscript and describe any precautions or safety protocols used to minimize risks. The journal reserves the right to request further documentation regarding ethical approvals or risk assessments if necessary.

Failure to comply with ethical oversight standards may result in rejection of the manuscript, retraction of published articles, or reporting to the appropriate regulatory or professional bodies. Ethical accountability is a shared responsibility among authors, institutions, and the journal.

Peer Review Process

All manuscripts submitted to Indonesian Journal of Material Research undergo a double-blind peer review process, meaning that both reviewers and authors remain anonymous throughout the review. This approach ensures an impartial and objective evaluation of the submitted work, based solely on academic merit, scientific rigor, and alignment with the journal’s scope.

Each manuscript is initially assessed by the editorial team to determine its suitability for peer review. Submissions that pass this preliminary check are assigned to at least two independent experts in the relevant field. Reviewers are selected based on their expertise, publication record, and lack of conflicts of interest with the authors or research.

Reviewers are asked to evaluate the originality, methodology, quality of data and analysis, clarity of presentation, and significance of the research. Their comments and recommendations help guide the editorial decision, which may be to accept, revise (minor or major), or reject the manuscript. Authors are expected to respond to reviewer comments thoroughly and submit revised versions in a timely manner.

The Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with the editorial board when necessary, makes the final decision on publication. All editorial decisions are based on the quality and relevance of the manuscript and the reviewers’ assessments, and are made free from external influence or bias.

The journal maintains strict confidentiality throughout the peer review process. Manuscripts, reviews, and editorial communications are not shared or disclosed to third parties without explicit permission.

Data Sharing and Access

Indonesian Journal of Material Research encourages transparency, reproducibility, and the responsible management of research data. Authors are expected to retain the original data and records associated with their manuscript for at least 10 years following publication and must be prepared to provide access to this data upon reasonable request from editors, reviewers, or other qualified researchers.

Authors may be required to submit raw data, analytical procedures, or other supporting materials during the peer review process to validate their findings. Where appropriate, authors are encouraged to deposit datasets in publicly accessible, discipline-specific repositories, institutional repositories, or general data archives, and to include a data availability statement in the manuscript.

When data cannot be shared due to legal, ethical, or proprietary restrictions, authors should clearly explain these limitations in the manuscript. In studies involving human participants, data must be anonymized to protect individual privacy in accordance with data protection regulations.

Failure to retain or provide data when requested, or misrepresentation of data availability, may result in the rejection or retraction of the manuscript. Promoting open data practices is essential for advancing scientific integrity and collaborative discovery.

Plagiarism Detection

Indonesian Journal of Material Research maintains a strict policy against all forms of plagiarism, including direct copying, paraphrasing without proper attribution, and self-plagiarism. The journal defines plagiarism as the use of another person's ideas, words, data, or work without appropriate acknowledgment or permission, presenting them as one’s own original contribution.

To uphold academic integrity, all submitted manuscripts are routinely screened for plagiarism using professional similarity detection tools such as iThenticate. The editorial team carefully evaluates the similarity reports to distinguish between acceptable overlaps (e.g., references, standard methodologies) and unethical reproduction of content.

If plagiarism is detected during the editorial process, the manuscript will be rejected immediately. If plagiarism is discovered post-publication, the journal reserves the right to retract the article and inform the relevant institutions and funding agencies. In cases of disputed or borderline cases, the editorial board will investigate and make decisions in line with COPE guidelines.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscript is free of plagiarism, and that all sources are appropriately cited. The journal expects all contributors to demonstrate honesty, originality, and respect for the work of others in their scholarly writing.

Publication Decisions

The Editor-in-Chief of Indonesian Journal of Material Research holds the final responsibility for deciding which of the submitted manuscripts will be published in the journal. These decisions are based on the manuscript’s scientific merit, originality, clarity, and relevance to the journal’s scope, as well as the results of the peer review process. The editorial team considers reviewers' recommendations, the validity of the work, its contribution to the field, and legal considerations such as libel, copyright infringement, and ethical misconduct.

Editorial decisions are made independently and are not influenced by the authors' affiliations, nationality, race, gender, religion, or political beliefs. The editorial process is conducted in a fair and unbiased manner to ensure that every submission is evaluated solely on its academic content.

The editorial board may consult with other editors or external reviewers when necessary to reach a final decision, particularly in complex or borderline cases. In all instances, the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts is preserved throughout the review and decision-making process.

Indonesian Journal of Material Research is committed to maintaining high standards of editorial independence and integrity. All editorial staff are required to disclose any potential conflicts of interest and must recuse themselves from handling any manuscript in which such conflicts exist.

Corrections and Retractions

Indonesian Journal of Material Research recognizes the importance of maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the scholarly record. When significant errors, inaccuracies, or ethical breaches are identified in published articles—whether through author notification, reader concerns, or editorial investigation—the journal will take prompt and appropriate action.

Corrections (Errata):
If an error is discovered that does not invalidate the main findings of the work but may affect understanding or accurate citation (e.g., typographical errors, author name misspellings, figure mislabeling), a correction notice (erratum) will be published. The correction will be clearly linked to the original article and will describe the nature of the error.

Retractions:
If serious issues are identified—such as fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, duplicate publication, or undisclosed conflicts of interest—that compromise the validity or ethical integrity of the work, the article may be retracted. A retraction notice will explain the reason for the retraction and remain permanently accessible in place of the original article. Retractions follow COPE guidelines and are applied transparently and consistently.

Expressions of Concern:
In cases where an investigation is ongoing or conclusive evidence is unavailable, the journal may publish an expression of concern to inform readers of potential issues related to the article.

Authors, readers, and reviewers are encouraged to notify the editorial office if they identify any concerns about published content. The journal will respond promptly to all credible reports and initiate investigation procedures when necessary.

Duties of Editors

The editorial team of Indonesian Journal of Material Research is committed to ensuring a fair, objective, and ethical editorial process. Editors play a central role in safeguarding the integrity of the journal and upholding the highest standards in scholarly publishing.

Editorial Independence and Fair Play
Editors evaluate submitted manuscripts exclusively on the basis of their academic merit—originality, clarity, validity, and relevance to the journal’s scope—without regard to the authors' race, gender, institutional affiliation, nationality, or personal beliefs. Editorial decisions are made free from external influence, including that of the journal’s publisher or any other party.

Confidentiality
Editors and editorial staff must treat all submitted manuscripts as confidential documents. Information about a manuscript must not be disclosed to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, and other editorial advisers as necessary.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
Editors must not use unpublished material disclosed in a submitted manuscript for their own research or personal advantage without the express written consent of the authors. If an editor has a conflict of interest regarding a manuscript (due to personal, financial, or professional relationships), they must withdraw from the editorial process for that submission and delegate responsibility to another qualified editor.

Editorial Decision-Making
The Editor-in-Chief holds the final authority on decisions related to publication. These decisions are based on the outcome of the peer review process, the quality of the work, and legal or ethical concerns. Editors may consult with other editors or reviewers to reach a decision, particularly in cases where reviewer opinions conflict.

Handling Misconduct
In cases of suspected misconduct (e.g., plagiarism, data manipulation, unethical research), editors will initiate an appropriate investigation in line with COPE guidelines. If concerns are validated, corrective actions—such as rejection, correction, or retraction—will be implemented.

Duties of Reviewers

Peer reviewers play a vital role in maintaining the quality and integrity of scholarly publishing. The review process relies on the professional judgment, objectivity, and confidentiality of reviewers. Indonesian Journal of Material Research expects all reviewers to uphold the following responsibilities:

Confidentiality
Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. Reviewers must not share, distribute, or discuss the manuscript with others unless authorized by the Editor-in-Chief. The content must not be used for personal research purposes or any form of academic advantage.

Objectivity and Constructive Feedback
Reviewers must provide an objective, balanced, and constructive assessment of the manuscript. Criticism should focus on the content and scientific merit of the work, not on the authors personally. Reviewers are encouraged to provide clear comments and suggestions that can help authors improve the quality of their work.

Timeliness
Reviewers should respond to invitations promptly and complete reviews within the agreed timeline. If a reviewer is unable to provide a review or cannot meet the deadline, they should notify the editor immediately so that alternative reviewers can be appointed.

Identification of Ethical Issues and Relevant Work
Reviewers should alert the editors to any ethical concerns such as plagiarism, duplicate submission, or misuse of data. They should also identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors and suggest appropriate references where applicable.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
Reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could influence their judgment, such as personal, financial, or professional relationships with the authors or affiliated institutions. If such conflicts exist, the reviewer should decline the review.

By participating in the review process, reviewers contribute significantly to the quality control of the journal and to the advancement of their field.

Duties of Authors

Authors are expected to uphold high standards of integrity, accuracy, and responsibility in their research and its reporting. Submitting a manuscript to Indonesian Journal of Material Research implies that the work is original, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration elsewhere.

Accuracy and Integrity of Research
Authors must present an accurate account of the work performed and an objective discussion of its significance. All data must be represented truthfully without fabrication, falsification, or inappropriate data manipulation. The manuscript should include sufficient detail and references to allow others to replicate the research.

Originality and Plagiarism
Authors must ensure that the submitted manuscript is their own original work. Proper citation of all sources is required, including for ideas, data, figures, or text taken from other publications. Plagiarism in all forms—including self-plagiarism—is considered unethical and will result in immediate rejection or retraction.

Authorship Criteria
Only those who have made substantial contributions to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the research should be listed as authors. All co-authors must approve the final manuscript and agree to its submission. Contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be acknowledged in a separate section with their consent.

Acknowledgment of Sources and Funding
All sources of financial support for the research must be disclosed, including grant numbers or institutional funding. Authors must also properly acknowledge any individual or organization that contributed to the work but does not meet authorship criteria.

Reporting of Ethical Compliance
If the research involves human participants, animals, or hazardous materials, authors must provide appropriate ethical approvals and consent documentation. A statement regarding compliance with ethical standards must be included in the manuscript.

Corrections and Retractions
If authors discover significant errors or inaccuracies in their published work, they are obligated to promptly inform the journal’s editors and cooperate in issuing a correction or retraction as appropriate.

By submitting a manuscript, authors agree to adhere to the ethical and editorial policies of Indonesian Journal of Material Research and to cooperate fully during the review and publication process.

Publisher Responsibility

The publisher of Indonesian Journal of Material Research shares responsibility with the editorial board in upholding ethical standards and maintaining the integrity of the journal. The publisher is committed to ensuring that the editorial process is transparent, independent, and free from commercial or political influence.

Support for Editorial Independence
The publisher respects the editorial team’s autonomy in making publication decisions and does not interfere with manuscript handling, peer review, or content selection. All decisions are made based on scholarly merit and the principles of ethical publishing.

Prevention of Misconduct
In collaboration with editors, the publisher takes all reasonable steps to identify and prevent the publication of manuscripts that involve research misconduct, including plagiarism, data falsification, and unethical experimentation. If allegations of misconduct arise, the publisher will support a transparent and fair investigation in accordance with COPE guidelines.

Archiving and Access
The publisher ensures the long-term preservation and open accessibility of all published content through partnerships with digital archiving services and institutional repositories. Indonesian Journal of Material Research operates under an open-access model and is committed to the permanent availability of scholarly research.
